Decadent and rich in flavor , Ghirardelli is a chocolate lover’s dream. The Ghirardelli Chocolate Factory, at the corner of North Point and Polk, in San Francisco, California, was founded in 1852 by master chocolatier Domenico Ghirardelli , who arrived to San Francisco from Peru in 1849 with his wife. Originally running out of a California Street shop, the factory opened in 1854. After Domenico’s passing in 1894, control of the company passed to his son, who ran it until 1923 when it was sold to the Pick family chocolate company.
The building that houses Ghirardelli is one San Francisco’s most iconic structures and remains a major landmark in the city today.
