The painting is based on a picture taken at Mauna Kea Beach Park, Hawaii. There’s a hut there called the Pukalani Superette. It sells sandwiches and ice cream, but also surfboards for rent and other beach-related equipment. The adjacent parking lot is a popular place for photographs because it has a view of the white sand beach, the blue ocean, and of course, Mauna Kea.
When I arrived at 10pm there were already people lined up for their chance to snap a picture of themselves in this location with their cellphones or disposable cameras.

In this world where modern civilization has been destroyed, these flowers represent an oasis of beauty. Just looking at them, I could feel my concerns…
